Logs are the general-purpose, high-volume record of system activity: every line a service writes to stdout is a log. Events are semantically richer, lower-volume records of discrete, meaningful occurrences. In OpenTelemetry, events travel through the log pipeline but carry an event.name attribute that distinguishes them as intentional signals rather than incidental output.
