The Collector is a standalone process that receives telemetry from your applications, applies processing steps such as sampling, filtering, and enrichment, then exports to one or more backends. It is technically optional since SDKs can export directly, but in production it is strongly recommended: it centralizes pipeline management, prevents application restarts when backend configuration changes, and provides tail-based sampling that the SDKs alone cannot perform.
