Databases are usually the stateful backbone that makes the rest of the system stateless. The compute tier is built so that any instance can read from and write to the same database, which holds the authoritative state. In analytical systems, that role is often played by object storage paired with a metadata catalog, as in the Hydrolix platform overview.
