The Collector includes processors for batching writes, capping memory usage, applying head-based and tail-based sampling to reduce trace volume, and filtering out low-value signals before they reach storage. For log and metric workloads that grow into billions of events per day, Collector-side controls are necessary but not sufficient on their own; the storage backend architecture matters equally, which is why observability platform selection is a key architectural decision once OTel collection is working reliably.
