In Hive, the query author must write explicit partition filter predicates or the engine scans everything. Iceberg's hidden partitioning applies transforms — identity, bucket, truncate, year, month, day, hour — at the table definition level. The engine rewrites query predicates automatically to match the physical layout, so analysts query raw column values without knowing how the data is physically organized. Partition schemes can also change without breaking existing queries or requiring data migration.
